A recent article by mydesert.com explores the real life of a Florida Pet Psychic Reader, who is reportedly able to communicate with animals.
Roberta Temple’s cat, Gracie, is having trouble adjusting to his new home.
A few months after moving into the Palm Springs house, the outdoor cat stopped going outside, prompting a bewildered Temple to buy a litter box — and visit pet psychic Cherie Vergini.
“There’s something I think mentally or emotionally going on,” Temple tells Vergini during a 15-minute session at Ambrosia Pet Deli in Palm Desert.
“Let me ask him,” Vergini says.
Her focus shifts from Temple to the ground for several seconds before she says frankly, “He’s not a big fan of the new place. He wants to know why you moved.”
And so began one of the dialogues between pet and owner — with Vergini’s high-pitched and soothing voice relaying the animal’s messages — that comprise the psychic’s fulltime, seven-day-a-week career.
Temple signed up for a slot Saturday, when Vergini held short sessions from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., as she does twice monthly at local pet supply stores.
Though most people bring in their pets during the Saturday sessions, it’s just as effective to communicate remotely, Vergini said, as she does with Temple and Gracie.
Among the messages that came through during Saturday’s session are a dog who says she’s training the new dog in the house, a cat who doesn’t like when her owner feeds stray cats near the house and a former rescue dog who begs for reassurance that his beloved new home is his last.
Vergini tells Temple she can feel Gracie’s panic as the cat remembers the dog attack that spooked her from returning to the backyard. Vergini listens for more, laughs suddenly and says, “right, yeah,” as though on a phone call.
Vergini says later that speaking to animals isn’t like a phone call at all, but that she tunes into their emotions and they fill her with “a sense of knowing.”
She tells Temple that after spending time indoors, Gracie is surprised to find things aren’t as he’d imagined.
“He thought there was all this action going on inside the house because he was out most of the time,” Vergini says. “He said it’s much quieter than he thought it would be.”
She talks quickly, as though the words are racing to get out of her mouth. Vergini said she doesn’t edit her messages.
She doesn’t think it’d be right and admits it’d be difficult to stop the words from coming out.
“I can’t filter what I say. It comes through me and I have to just say it,” she said.
She earned Temple’s trust about two years ago, just a week after she’d discovered her year-old female cat Gracie was actually a male.
When Temple visited the pet psychic at a fundraiser, she hadn’t said anything about Gracie when Vergini said, “He has been laughing for a year.”
“’He has been hysterical thinking you thought he was a girl,’” Temple recalled Vergini saying. “Literally a week before I wouldn’t have known what she was talking about.”
About five years since Vergini left her job as a corporate event planner and a six-figure salary to work full time as a psychic, she said she’s never looked back.
She’s learned to turn off her sense for human and animal emotions. It feels intrusive on people’s privacy and it’s emotionally exhausting, she said.
She conducts readings of both people and animals.
“For humans, they kind of want to know about the future,” she said. “We are so much thinking ahead and we’re not present in the moment, where animals are present in the moment.”
Vergini advised Temple to go with Gracie outside until she felt comfortable again.
The session’s end sounds like couple’s therapy. Temple asked Vergini to tell Gracie that she felt his distance, that she missed the hugs.
“You know that whatever it takes, we’re gonna get through it,” Temple said.
After a pause, Vergini nods.
“I really don’t feel like myself,” she tells the owner, who leans forward to listen. “He’s saying just be patient with me.”
