How can a woman, one without access to professional help, take steps towards freeing herself from an emotionally abusive relationship?

As I think about this question, I realize that this was the inspiration for my writing in the first place. I wanted to reach battered women who requested, but could not afford, my professional services.

In my writings over the last three years, I have focused on the psychology of relationship violence. There are a number of important learning steps to freeing yourself from emotional abuse…

#1 Recognize that verbal, psychological and emotional abuse are not about you.

The cruel words that your abusive partner freely flings at you and the hurtful emotional manipulations that he plays on you say more about him than they say about you.

In fact, I’d go so far as to say that the specifics are merely the convenient bullets used effortlessly because of their convenience. For example, if he picks on you because of your weight or puts you down over your intellect, recognize that he grabs for what’s in his reach.

He may even batterer you with an innermost vulnerability that you intimately shared with him on an earlier occasion. So, while the words and abusive conduct may be relevant to your life or your experience, be mindful that they are simply used as the darts to throw because they are conveniently within his reach.

#2 See the battering assaults for what they are.

Batterers strike for one reason and one reason alone. They seek to transform their own vulnerability into invincibility relative to you.

Battering, whether emotional abuse, verbal abuse or physical abuse, is an attempt to create or maintain unequal distribution of power in an intimate relationship. It is a strategy to consciously, and often unconsciously, exert control.

You probably know that abuse is fundamentally about control. And when an abuser feels he’s losing his grip, violence will escalate so as to re-engage control. The way in which you experience this is that his emotional assault will be enhanced in direct proportion to his vulnerability.

So, you must see that the act of being emotionally abusive is his way of reconciling his own perceived impotence. It is not an expression of his power; rather, it is an expression of his own personal vulnerability.

#3 Find the YOU behind the assault.

This key is ultimately what gives you the strength to not just merely survive, but to thrive in the face of emotional abuse. And ultimately, it is what allows you to break free from an emotionally abusive relationship.

When you know the YOU within yourself, you refuse to be defined by your partner’s emotional assaults. You draw an enduring strength from this knowing that serves to support your higher good.

In my own life, the practice of meditation allowed me to cultivate an alliance with the essence uniting all of us. And from here, I was no longer entrapped by intimate partner abuse.

Breaking Free or Overcoming Emotional Abuse

Now for some women, the ultimate breaking free may entail leaving the relationship and seeking refuge outside of the home shared with their abusive partner. And for others, it may involve inspiring their partner’s participation in an appropriate domestic abuse intervention program. This is most likely to happen as a result of the emotional abuse victim engaging in her own psychotherapeutic process.

Be mindful that you—and only you—can know the right path for yourself. There are no right and wrong answers when it comes to domestic abuse. There are only decisions that support your safety and the realization of your highest good.

Tip 3. Heighten the awareness of each of your five senses. Intuition may be called the sixth sense, but if our five senses are dull, we can’t expect the sixth sense to be sharp. Our lives offer an endless playground for our

five senses. Mix up your five senses. Begin by holding an object, any object, such as a stone or piece of cloth. Become intimate with that object. Look at it until you can see it with your eyes closed. Then ask yourself what the object tastes like. Use your imagination. You don’t actually have to put the object into your mouth and taste it.

Once you’ve gone through all five senses, mix it up and ask yourself questions such as: What color is the taste? or What does the object’s sound feel like? Then go to the next level and ask yourself questions such as: If this object could speak, what wisdom about my life would it tell me?

Tip 4. Become aware of the whispers from Spirit by becoming more aware of life in each moment. Be open to receiving information and guidance to help make your life better. Nature is a wonderful teacher for intuition. Pay attention to the animals that cross your path and the winged ones who grab your attention. If you live in the center of the Midwest and a flock of seagulls dip and dive all around you, listen. Are they asking you to let go of your worries and soar with them?

Nature is alive with stone people, cloud people, tree people, and a myriad of others who speak to us all the time. We only need to listen.

Tip 5. Journal and dialogue with that which is greater than you: God, Goddess, a spirit guide, an angel, the highest self of someone you love and trust who has passed over. Choose a regular time to meet. Following morning meditation is ideal. Use your favorite blank journal, and just start writing, or if you’re a visual learner, draw. It doesn’t matter what you write, just write, or draw, and keep on going for about three pages. It usually takes about three pages to get pass the objections in your mind that keeps you from accessing your deeper nature.

You’ll feel the shift, and once you do, write a question, then write the answer. Don’t judge the answer as you write, just write down the words that come to you. This is a subtle process. Don’t expect shouts. Trust what comes. Later, go back and read what you wrote. You’ll be amazed at the wisdom that comes through your inner world.

Tip 6. Play intuitive games with yourself and others. Before getting into line at the bank or market, ask yourself which line is the quickest. Gather a group of photographs of different people that are all the same size,

turn them upside down, and then guess whose picture is on the other side of each photograph. Use your intuition to stay safe. I live in deer country. Every time I feel the deer near, I slow down. Sure enough, deer will be around the next corner or over the next hill.

Tip 7. Let go of control and surrender to that part of yourself that is connected to Spirit. None of us are in control of life, but we are in charge of our lives. We can choose to experience life to its fullest. Or not. We can choose to be grateful for what we have. Or not. We can choose to live a life of service to our own lives and to all humanity. Or not.

Trying to hold control is like trying to stop a river from flowing. Taking charge of your life is becoming the master of your own destiny, flowing with the river and laughing all the way, and allowing your intuition to guide you to a greater, more fulfilling life.

These steps to awaken to your deeper intuition and activate your psychic powers take time and practice. Be patient and loving with yourself. Tapping into your intuition comes in its own time, but comes only after you take the steps toward your own greater self.

Otherwise, the seed you planted will not be able to grow. It is a kind of love that will have the power to move mountains and will overcome whatever comes your way.

TRAIT 2: Giving

By this I don’t mean material things. I would mean to give selflessly, putting oneself a second priority and have that of your partner first. Well the point is that it shows you care what they think of you. It shows them that you want to look nice for them. It also works for both parts of the relationship — you should both want to look good for each other. You can dress up to go out, or dress up to stay home, you can even dress up for the bedroom but be warned, that’s probably going to put more than a spark into your relationship!
  2. Keep a daily snuggle time on your schedule. Life is busy, things get in the way of getting together with your partner, stuff to do, deadlines to meet and you fall exhausted into bed each night with a passing thought of whether or not you hugged your partner that day. Commit to at least a 15 minute snuggle period each day — the time of day is up to you, but make sure that you keep this time sacred and nothing gets in the way of it.   5. Initiate surprises. Don’t allow the relationship to fall into a dependable pattern, keep it fresh! Plan a picnic without telling your partner (just make sure it doesn’t conflict with anything else first!), wear something sexy, put love notes in his pocket, send a sizzling email full of promises you’ve every intention of fulfilling, etc. Surprises don’t have to cost anything, sometimes the best ones don’t cost anything more than a little thought and a lot of imagination!
